Removing pet stains from carpets is one of those chores that most Shih Tzu owners do once in awhile but if your efforts are not producing the results you want, here is an article by Alinda from Clean Life Guide that will give you some tips.

Most pet owners complain about the unpleasant smell they have to deal with in return for keeping a pet. Most times its either a cat or dog. An animal’s urine has a high content of ammonia, urea and other acids which cause the toxic smell.

So, for one to live a healthy life with pets, one must take necessary precautions and measures. Most small dog owners would train their pets where and when but not every day is a Sunday.

By this, I mean that one may need to dig deep to get rid of the stains and odours caused by their adorable pets.

Most small dog owners would train their pets where and when but not every day is a Sunday. By this, I mean that one may need to dig deep to get rid of the stains and odours caused by their adorable pets.

Removing Pet Stains and Odors from Carpet

Through my research, I figured out that there are many ways one can deal with this problem. These are inexpensive and best of all you can make them at home.  Who does not love a homemade remedy? 

The first step to removing pet stains is to blot out as much urine as you can by placing a paper towel in the affected area and applying pressure downwards. 

Homemade Solution 1 for Removing Pet Stains

Ingredients

  • Baking Soda
  • White Vinegar
  • Lukewarm Water

Directions

After blotting out the urine, the first home remedy involves the use of baking soda, home based solution of vinegar, and lukewarm water. 

Pour a generous amount of baking soda on the affected area then spray the home-based vinegar solution onto the baking soda. The chemical reaction that occurs with the baking soda and vinegar will create a semi volcano. After about five seconds wipe it out using a piece of cloth.  Follow with a rinse of the lukewarm water.

Homemade Solution 2 for Removing Pet Stains

Ingredients

  • 3% Hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking Soda
  • Few drops Dishwashing detergent (Optional)

Directions

The second alternative to using the vinegar and baking soda is using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda mixture. Hydrogen peroxide will act the same way as vinegar but slightly more efficient. It will quickly break down the molecules contained in the urine. 

For this application first test a small area of your carpet to make sure it will not discolour your carpet. 

The application will be made the same way as the first except you will replace the vinegar with the ½ cup 3% of hydrogen peroxide and maybe just to add some icing to the cake one will add a few drops of dishwashing detergent to add some fragrance.

Homemade Solution 3:  Requires three months to Prepare

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups of citrus fruit peels
  • 6-8 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 1 litre (1 quart) Water
  • Container with a tight fitting lid

Instructions

The third homemade remedy is not immediate and will take some time to prepare but is very effective during usage. 

You will need citrus fruits peels, about one and a half cup of them. Six to eight tablespoons of brown sugar, one litre of water (approximately one quart) and lastly a container with a tightly screw top cap to hold all of the ingredients. 

Mix all the ingredient together and pour into your container.  Screw the cap and shake all the ingredients together. 

Set the container in a place where it will not be disturbed.  The bottle should regularly be opened to let out gases so that it does not blow up. 

After three months, your home based enzymatic cleaner is ready and will be safe to use. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and then saturate the affected area.  Let it settle for about ten minutes and wipe it out using a dry cloth.

After you have successfully removed the urine stains and odors, it is advisable to prevent the accidents from happening again.  You can do this by rubbing some isopropyl alcohol onto the affected areas.  The alcohol will remove the odor,  “unmarking” these areas.  As you know, pets love to mark their territory using urine.

If these procedures do not work out after doing them repeatedly for about two to four times, you may need to consider using the commercial detergents and pet cleaners. 

When shopping for the stain and odour remover take preference with the enzymatic cleanser as it contains enzymes that will break down the urine molecules. 

For application spray down the cleaner on the affected area and let it sit for as much time depending on the freshness of the stain. After which you will clean it out using a piece of cloth. Do this repeatedly for better results. Lastly, if this does not work the one should consider using a pet carpet cleaner enlist the help of a professional service.
