Tips for Naming Your Shih Tzu Girl

A red and white Shih Tzu puppy named Tulip is posing for the camera on the steps
  1. Keep It Simple:  The best dog names are short and easy to pronounce. One or two syllables are perfect for Shih Tzu Dogs.

  2. Don’t choose a name that sounds like a command.  Names that sound like common dog commands, such as sit, stay, down, wait, and so forth, may confuse your Shih Tzu. Also, if you choose a name that sounds similar to someone in your family, you'll likely find your furbaby confused.

  3. Consider Your Dog's Personality and Appearance.  Some dogs have names based on their personality, appearance, or special interests. If your dog has some unique characteristic, a name that reflects these special traits might make sense. Here are a couple of examples:
-Muffin for a cream colored Shih Tzu
-Bones for a dog that adores bones
-A happy dog might be called Joy

  4. Don’t Forget the Obvious.  Puppy might be a good name for a puppy, but how will it sound when the dog is an adult? Pick a name that you will be comfortable with for the next 15 years. Remember, you may need to call your dog if he gets away from you. Be sure that the name you choose is something you can yell. I’m always reminded of the story told to me by a friend. She adopted a Shiba Inu while stationed in Japan. She named him Sake. Living in a private residence away from the army base, the dog got out quite frequently. She would call him by name and use a deep, booming voice when this happened. Neighbors would stick their heads out of their doors and windows to find out what the ruckus was all about.

  5. Do not choose a culturally sensitive name. People often come up with a historical name that they like. But be sure it’s appropriate and you understand the implications it might have. It might seem fine now, but there may come a time when your dog’s name could get you in trouble.

  6. Test the Name:  Include the whole family in the naming process. Then, try out the name at home or a park to see how it sounds.

  7. Avoid Popular Trends: Unless you love the most popular dog names, find something more unique. According to the AKC, girls' most popular dog names in 2024 include Luna, Bella, Daisy, Lucy, Willow, Stella, Maggie, Sadie, Lola, and Rosie (in that order). Yes, I’m guilty of having had dogs named Lucy, Lola, and Rosie over the years.

  8. Do you have a special interest, a favorite character from the movies, or a singer you adore? If you love boating or being around water, consider a nautical name. If your family loves being outdoors, hiking, camping, or gardening, consider a name inspired by nature. While breeding dogs, I always asked my buyers if they had picked a name so that I could start calling the puppy by their name. It was fun getting to know the buyers by the names that they chose:
  • Snoopy (not from Peanuts, but from Snoop Dogg)
  • Stevie (Stevie Nicks)
  • Chewie (Chewbacca) usually reserved for boy dogs
  • Mickey and Minnie
  • Moya (from old TV show, Farscape)

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I choose the perfect name for my girl dog?

When choosing the perfect name for a girl dog, consider her personality, appearance, or breed (Shih Tzu dogs from China). Also, consider your own interests or personal preferences.

2. Can I change my dog’s name if I adopt an older dog?

Yes, but transition it slowly by using the old and new names together until your dog starts responding to her new name.

3. Are there any popular trends in naming female dogs?

Yes, Many names are inspired by pop culture.  People also love human names for the furbaby. Don’t feel like you need to follow current trends, as you may find that your dog has the same name as all the dogs on your block.

4. Should a dog’s name reflect its breed?

If you do a Google search, you might find that naming a dog based on its breed is a popular trend. You certainly can choose a Chinese name for your Shih Tzu dog, but it’s not necessary.

5. How long should a dog’s name be?

One or two-syllable dog names are usually recommended because they are easy to say, and dogs will recognize them more easily.

Last Words

Getting a new puppy or adopting an older dog is a joyous occasion for everyone involved.  One of the first tasks is finding the perfect name and this should be done before serious training sessions begin.  There are many different girl dog names from which to choose.  Some are based on food and drinks, others are those considered to be human names.  Keep your dog name short and choose one that reflects the dog's and your own personal tastes.
